When it comes to business, too often business owners become bogged down in the day-to-day running of things. We get caught up in the operation but fail to look at the big picture of what we hope to achieve and how. Success can be whittled down to a number of factors by answering some pertinent questions. These are the questions a business owner should be asking in order to achieve success.

Three things

To really knock business right out of the park you need to know the answer to three critical things:

WHAT: Exactly WHAT you want to achieve

When we talk about going into business or shifting our business up a level, it’s imperative to have a clear picture of what we want to achieve. Whether it’s a push to take a product from a stall at the market to supplying to retailers, a bid to go national, or a dream to bring a new service or product to the public, the WHAT is the core factor of business.

WHY: Why do you wish to bring your business product or service to the public?

When you know WHY, then you have passion and drive, which inspires massive and consistent action.

Business has to be a labour of love, but does not have to be a passion without economic reward. Answering why you wish to start your business, build your business, or be in business; why you wish for people to use this service or product is how you get to the galvanising core of your drive to achieve success.

HOW: How do you plan to achieve your goals?

Possibly the most important factor in achieving business success is having a plan of action for HOW success will be achieved and when.

Most people know WHAT they want to achieve and WHY, however far too many don’t know HOW, and this is the essence of business planning and why it’s so important.

The big question

Marketing pioneer Lester Wunderman famously noted: “The most dangerous question a prospect or customer asks is ‘Why should I?’ And he may ask it more than once…”

As a business owner you must know the answer to that question in order to provide the rational and emotional answers that inspire your customer to use your services, your products and your business.

Once you know what you want, why you want it, how to get it and how to inspire your customers to use you, your path to business success is clear.
